You have probably seen the commercials for Angie’s List advertising its more than 1.5 million members nationwide that both provide and then use Angie’s List reviews to find the best local service providers, like roofers, plumbers, handymen, mechanics, doctors and dentists. Businesses are rated on Angie’s List only when a member submits a report. Angie’s List holds itself out as a consumer-driven service of real folks looking for a way to find trustworthy companies that perform high-quality work. Unfortunately, it appears that Angie’s List does not hold itself to the same level of trustworthiness that its members have come to expect from the businesses they rate. Instead, it appears that Angie’s List charges its members an undisclosed renewal fees at rates that exceed the members’ original membership fee.
Before originally enrolling in Angie’s List, members are required to agree to an automatic renewal of their Angie’s List membership. In conjunction with their enrollment and agreement to Angie’s List’s automatic renewal, enrolling members must also provide Angie’s List with a valid credit or debit card to keep on file at the time of enrollment to allow for the automatic renewal.
However, when it comes time for a membership to be renewed, instead of billing its members at the stated membership fee, Angie’s List apparently bills is members a more expensive membership renewal fee, in contravention of the plain language of the membership agreement. If you, or someone you know has been charged an undisclosed membership renewal fee by Angie’s List, please contact us to discuss your legal rights.
