Loehmann’s is one of the most popular discount department stores in the Northeast. Part of Loehmann’s success is its ability to offer good prices for products people want. Unfortunately, many consumers complain that Loehmann’s gives them something they don’t want – unauthorized credit card charges for magazine subscriptions. When customers check out at Loehmann’s, some are offered the chance to receive “free” magazine subscriptions.
These customers are told that the first three months are free; after that time, customers are told that they will be contacted by the publisher to see if they want to pay for further deliveries and before their credit card will be charged. However, many consumers report that no one ever calls, and instead, their credit cards are automatically charged at the end of the three months. Others complain that it is impossible to find contact information to call and cancel, and consumers that can find a number to call have reported that it is impossible to navigate the automated calling prompts to cancel the charges. More disturbing, some consumers even report that Loehmann’s check out personnel sign customers up for the “free” magazines without their consent.
