In September 2016, amid reports of excessive vibrations associated with washing heavy loads using Samsung washing machines, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advised owners of Samsung washing machines sold between March 2011 and April 2016 to use delicate cycle when washing heavy loads, such as bedding and water-resistant, bulky items. The “violent” and “explosive” vibrations can cause the top of the washer to detach from the chassis and cause bodily harm and damage to surrounding property. In response, Samsung issued a product recall in November 2016 for nearly three million of its washing machines sold during that period. The recall involved a warranty extension and in-home repair, a rebate on a new machine, or a complete refund if the washing machine was purchased within 30 days of the recall. Now, owners of Samsung washers repaired pursuant to the recall have a new problem: Washed items remain soaking wet even after spin cycle, belying advertising claims that the washers are capable of handling heavy loads; as a result, it takes three or more hours longer to dry the washed items in the dryer.
