In a recent report, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has issued a warning against powdered drink mixes marketed as “toddler milks” for older babies and children up to age 3. The AAP emphasizes that these products are unregulated, unnecessary, and “nutritionally incomplete.”

Marketed for babies older than 6 to 12 months and preschoolers up to age 3, these products are presented as nutritious options for the next stage of development. However, unlike infant formula—which is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and must meet specific nutrition requirements—there are no federal regulations governing milk drink mixes for older babies and toddlers.

These drinks are heavily promoted on platforms like TikTok, television ads, and other sites, and often contain added sugar and salt, which could lead to obesity and other diseases. Manufacturers claim these drinks can boost children’s brains or immune systems. However, Dr. George Fuchs, a member of the AAP’s nutrition committee, states that these claims are unproven.

While formula industry officials argue that these drinks could help fill “nutrition gaps” in children’s diets, Dr. Fuchs advises that older babies and toddlers should consume a balanced diet of solid foods. After age 1, they should also drink breast milk, fortified whole cow’s milk, and water.

Experts like Dr. Fuchs highlight the lack of common standards for toddler milks, leading to significant ingredient variations among brands. The AAP’s report serves as a caution for parents and caregivers to be mindful of these unregulated products.
