Debt collection is an unpleasant reality and companies are allowed to try to collect money owed to them. Of course, in most instances, it is unlawful to collect a “debt” that never existed or that has already been fully paid. Unfortunately, we have heard from sources that some companies have tried to collect on “debts” that were not owed – either because the “debt” never existed in the first place or because it was previously paid in full.
If a law firm or other debt collection agency attempted to collect a “debt” that you allegedly owed to Chase, American Express or HSBC and you either (a) never owed the debt or (b) you previously paid the debt in full and were not credited for payment, you may have been a victim of consumer fraud.
