As we have repeatedly noted, identity theft is a multi-billion dollar problem. Identity theft often occurs because of negligence or unlawful behavior by companies. But you should also be wary of criminals trying to get your personal information by “phishing” scams. Criminals who “phish” will send you “too good to be true” offers from companies that promise amazing rewards if you just provide your personal information (i.e. “just enter your address and phone number and you will win $10,000”).
The “reward” is just bait; and criminals will use your personal information to commit identity theft. It is important that you be vigilant and only give out your personal information to trusted entities. One of the recent scams is the “$1,000 Best Buy Gift Card.” People have been receiving text messages claiming that they won such a card, and they just need to provide their personal information to get the reward. This is a scam so do not give out your information.
Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
