FDA Issues Warning Letters Regarding CBD Products And Claims of Medical Treatment

Some CBD products and companies allegedly use unsubstantiated claims about the ability of CBD to treat health conditions to promote their products.  These claims include the ability to treat chronic pain, diabetes, glaucoma, cancer, and other chronic illnesses.  Many of these products also claim to treat mental illnesses, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, PTSD, and others.  However, the FDA issued warning letters in December 2020, some of which noted that certain methods of CBD consumption  may even be dangerous to users.

In a letter to the President of G & L Wellness, LLC, the FDA Director of the Office of Compliance wrote that the company’s CBD eyedrops were unapproved as drugs and were “especially concerning from a public health perspective because ophthalmic drug products can pose serious risk of harm to humans and/or animals if toxic substances are introduced directly into the eye because irreversible damage, including vision loss, can result.”

Similarly, the FDA warned a company called New Leaf Pharmaceuticals, LLC that its CBD nasal spray products were “especially concerning from a public health perspective because intranasal drug products may be rapidly absorbed through the highly vascularized nasal mucosa directly into systemic blood circulation, where they may exert undesirably systemic effects such as increased heart rate or elevated blood pressure. If toxic substances are introduced directly into the nose, harmful local effects such as bleeding, ulceration, or nasal septal perforation may occur.”
