Consumers are being warned by the FDA of the possible dangers of using the Safe-T-Lite UV WAND (“WAND”) manufactured by Max-Lux Corporation Limited(“Max-Lux”).
The FDA claims that using the WAND could expose the user and even people nearby to unsafe levels of ultraviolet-C radiation. High levels can lead to skin and/or eye injury only after a few seconds of use. And, according to the product instructions, the user should hold the hand-held device from anywhere between 30-60 seconds. The directions instruct the consumer to hold the device for the duration of the disinfection process as it emits ultraviolet-C radiation to disinfect surfaces. However, the radiation emitted is more than 3,000 times stronger than what is recommended.
Consumers generally use the WAND to attempt to disinfect surfaces and kill germs. However, the FDA is warning people to seek alternative cleaning methods and has issued a Notification of Defect Letter to the company that states their WAND is defective.
