Identity theft is a multi-billion-dollar problem. Although many companies have responded to this threat appropriately, some continue to risk theft of the sensitive personal and medical information entrusted to them by consumers and patients. Unfortunately, it appears HERITAGE PROVIDER NETWORK in California failed to protect the sensitive information of a massive number of people.

HOW DID THE BREACH OCCUR?

According to various news sources, the data breach notification says the ransomware attack occurred on December 1, 2022, with Regal’s employees noticing technical difficulties the following day.

After engaging a third-party cybersecurity expert to help investigate, it was determined that malware had infected the organization’s servers, so a system restoration process was initiated.

Based on the review of the logs, the investigation determined that the following data had been compromised:

  • Full name
  • Social Security Number (SSN)
  • Date of birth
  • Address
  • Medical diagnosis and treatment
  • Laboratory test results
  • Prescription data
  • Radiology reports
  • Health plan member number
  • Phone number

Ransomware actors steal this data to create further leverage when extorting healthcare organizations, taking advantage of the highly sensitive nature of medical data.

Cybercriminal use personal information with the primary incentive of using that private data to commit identity theft and financial fraud. Identity theft wreaks havoc on consumers’ finances, credit history, and reputation and can take time, money, and patience to resolve. Identity thieves use stolen personal information for a variety of crimes, including credit card fraud, phone or utilities fraud, banking or finance fraud, government fraud, and medical identity theft. Moreover, a person whose personal information has been compromised may not see the full extent of identity theft or fraud for years.
