Identity theft is a multi-billion-dollar problem. Although many companies have responded to this threat appropriately, some continue to risk theft of the sensitive personal information entrusted to them by consumers and employees. Unfortunately, FOREVER 21 failed to protect the sensitive information of thousands of employees and consumers.

HOW DID THE BREACH OCCUR?
According to various news sources, on or about March 20, 2023, Forever 21 discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which sensitive, personally identifiable information may have been accessed and acquired. Through its investigation, Forever 21 determined that the company was hacked over a three-month period beginning in early January 2023, during which intruders obtained files from its systems. This data included the personal information of current and former employees and Forever 21 customers. According to Forever 21, the hackers accessed employees’ and customers’ names, dates of birth, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, and information regarding employees’ Forever 21 health plan, including enrollment and premiums paid.

Identity theft wreaks havoc on consumers’ and employees’ finances, credit history, and reputation and can take time, money, and patience to resolve. Identity thieves use stolen personal information for various crimes, including credit card fraud, phone or utility fraud, banking or finance fraud, government fraud, and medical identity theft. Moreover, a person whose personal information has been compromised may not see the full extent of identity theft or fraud for years.

On August 29, 2023, Forever 21 sent out data breach letters to all individuals whose information was compromised due to the recent data security incident.
